The Doctoral Capstone Experience
This 14-week collaborative Doctoral Capstone Experience (DCE) was implemented with minor barriers. Throughout the implementation, I was able to learn more than anticipated, both academically and professionally. I learned more about ADA compliance than anticipated, as well as how to advocate for needed changes, how to advocate for myself to have a seat at discussion tables, and how to educate those outside of the healthcare field on the role and purpose OT has in recreation settings. Moreover, I honed my time management skills, interpersonal communications skills, self-advocacy skills, ability to develop interdisciplinary relationships, and grew in my ability to push past my comfort zone to participate in new learning experiences.
As my time at Xavier University comes to a close, I have begun to think about my future career as a licensed occupational therapist. Click here to view my 5-year post-graduation Professional Development Plan.
